JOB TITLE: Cook I
REPORT TO: Food Services Supervisor
JOB OR POSITION SUMMARY:
The Cook I works under the supervision of the Food Services Supervisor and in partnership with others in the school nutrition program and school district to support a sound nutrition program while following the National School Lunch Program and the National School Breakfast Program standards; federal, state, and local guidelines. The position responsibilities includes performing a variety of job functions essential to the successful operation in the kitchen.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Follows compliance expectations regarding all federal, state, and local regulations for the National School Lunch Program and the National School Breakfast Program
Provide orders for food and supplies for the kitchen based on monthly menus
Maintain a food and materials inventory to provide for adequate supplies in the school nutrition services program
Monitor and organize the freezer, refrigerator, and storeroom
Maintain high standards of control for quality food production and service
Assist kitchen staff and helps new staff and substitutes in the areas of customer service, standards of service and portion control
Use cash register and step in as needed following district practices and cashier procedures
Apply the use of methods and practices to ensure a cost effective program
Follow operational procedures for efficient and effective food production and service
Work with and assist other food service staff as needed
Maintain an environment conducive to protecting the health and well-being of the schools’ students by incorporating HACCP Guidelines and sanitation standards
Follow procedures for proper use and care of all equipment
Maintain a safe facility for performance of work
Prepares food, cooks, sets up and serves to meet the needs of the kitchen and customers
Assist with dishwashing and cleaning of kitchen equipment, pans and other dishes used during the day
Check in and verify all food service deliveries
Respond to emergencies, trouble calls, and remain flexible under changing needs and circumstances
Practice professional growth and development by attending in-service activities and other job related events in line with federal guidelines for professional standards
Positively represent the food services department, provide leadership, and communicate effectively between staff, students, vendors, parents and building/district administration as appropriate
Communicate effectively with Food Services Supervisor
Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct, including the requirements of confidentiality and personnel information
Demonstrate professionalism through punctuality and have consistent, reliable attendance
Comply with all district policies and procedures
Other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Knowledge of the National School Lunch Program and National School Breakfast Program and state and local regulations
Knowledge of nutritional standards and health and safety codes for school food services programs
Knowledge of HACCP Guidelines
Knowledge to interpret and follow standardized recipes
Working knowledge of cash registers, computers and basic applications
Skills in mathematical calculation and mathematical concepts and the ability to apply mathematical computations quickly
Skills and commitment to work with students of all ages
Skills to safely operate ovens, dishwasher, and other kitchen equipment
Ability to solve problems, work under pressure and accept responsibility
Ability to comfortable and safely lift, move, or carry objects up to 50 lbs. without assistance
Ability to produce and maintain accurate paperwork and production records
Ability to shift priorities with little or no advance notice and adapt in a calm, positive and flexible manner
Ability to positively contribute and cooperate as a team member within and across the district
Ability to communicate in a professional manner both orally and in writing
Ability to handle confidential matters in an ethical manner
Ability to work efficiently, effectively, and respectfully with staff and public
Classification: PSE, Food Services
Work Year/Days: 190 days per year, hours vary based upon assignment
Requirements
LICENSING/CREDENTIAL AND/OR EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid Food Handler’s card, First Aid/CPR certificate, or willingness to obtain and maintain
One year of experience managing all aspects of an independent kitchen preferable
Bilingual fluency in reading, writing, and speaking another major language if possible, Spanish preferred
All district employees shall undergo a criminal background check, including a fingerprint check by both State Patrol and FBI
All District employees shall sign an Authorization and Release of Information form relating to prior school district employment
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand for long periods of time, sit, lift, carry, move about hear and speak. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 25 to 50 pounds. The employee may need to wear protective clothing and work with sharp utensils and equipment with moving parts, often around hot surfaces. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
